How to claim it
- 1Check the routes: discharge from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, death while on active duty, or 20+ years of Guard or Reserve service qualifying for military retirement pay (or death before the qualification would have completed).
- 2Pre-register through the MyWisVets portal or form WDVA 2111 — eligibility settled in advance is the whole point of the form.
- 3The veteran's interment is free unless a private burial vault is chosen; a spouse or dependent child's interment costs $1,700 for casket burial, $978 for cremated remains, or $2,200 with a private vault — each including the gravesite, marker, opening and closing, and perpetual care.
