Health Care Aid Grant — Dental, Vision and Hearing When Nothing Else Will Pay

WDVA pays a veteran’s dental, vision or hearing bills directly to the provider once other sources of aid are exhausted — up to $800 of dental care a year, $4,000 of extended dental care over two years, $400 of vision care, and $1,875 for each hearing aid.

  • WDVA publishes each cap separately: dental aid may not exceed $800 in any consecutive 12-month period; extended dental care may not exceed $4,000 in any consecutive 24-month period; vision care may not exceed $400 in any consecutive 12-month period; hearing care may not exceed $200 in any consecutive 12-month period; and aid for each hearing aid may not exceed $1,875 in any consecutive 24-month period.
  • Health Care Aid and Subsistence Aid share a single programme LIFETIME limit of $7,500 between them. What one draws, the other cannot.
  • The money is paid to the provider, not to you, so the amount you see is a bill that does not arrive rather than cash in hand.

How to claim it

  1. 1Go through your county or tribal veterans service officer. WDVA states applications may be submitted through the CVSO/TVSO, and that office knows what the reviewers want to see.
  2. 2Exhaust the other routes first and be able to show it. WDVA describes this as limited financial assistance for those who have exhausted other sources of aid, and that test is applied before the caps are.
  3. 3Ask your dentist, optometrist or audiologist the awkward question before you apply: WDVA may not provide the aid unless the provider agrees to accept the department’s payment, your insurance or third-party payments, and whatever the department decides you can pay, as full settlement.
  4. 4Wait for the Description of Benefits. An approved applicant gets a DOB listing the approved care and the period in which it must be provided — give it to the provider, who returns it to WDVA with the billing.
  5. 5Watch the DOB clock. Invoices received more than 60 days after the DOB expires, or after any extension, are denied.
  6. 6If a DOB is already outstanding, get a binding quote from the provider — WDVA requires one before issuing an additional DOB.
  7. 7Read the Assistance Grant Fact Sheet (WDVA 2462) before you commit to a treatment plan, so you know which cap you are working against.

CorrectionThis is not a reimbursement. WDVA states payments are sent directly from the department to the health care provider, so a veteran who pays the dentist first and asks afterwards has taken the route the programme does not use.
CorrectionThe $7,500 is a LIFETIME figure shared with Subsistence Aid, not an annual one. Treat this grant as a finite reserve rather than a recurring allowance.
Worth knowingHearing has two separate caps that are easy to confuse: $200 in any 12 months for hearing CARE — exams and related work by a licensed audiologist — and $1,875 in any 24 months for each hearing AID.
