How to claim it

  1. 1Check which definition you are applying under. Where the veteran is the applicant, the test is the definition of "veteran" in Wis. Stat. 45.01(12); where an immediate family member applies, it is Wis. Stat. 45.01(12)(g) to (i).
  2. 2Check the service length. WDVA states active duty under honorable conditions for 90 days or more during wartime, two years or more during peacetime, or the full period of the initial service obligation.
  3. 3If your service was shorter, read the exceptions before giving up — WDVA names discharge due to a service-connected disability, reasons of hardship, a reduction in forces, and service in a designated crisis zone.
  4. 4Complete WDVA 1038 and apply online, or send it to the Division of Veterans Benefits by post, or by email to Records@dva.wisconsin.gov.
  5. 5Use the Wisconsin Farm Center rather than treating the logo as the whole benefit — it provides access to agricultural resources and guidance on developing a business plan to launch a farm.
  6. 6Ask to be added to the public searchable list of Wisconsin’s Veteran-Owned Farms, which is where the certification earns its keep commercially.

CorrectionThere is no farm grant here. WDVA describes certification, a logo, a public listing and Farm Center support — a veteran expecting start-up capital from this programme is expecting the wrong thing.
Worth knowingA separate WDVA certification exists for a Veteran-Owned Business generally, on a different and somewhat wider service test. A veteran running a farm as a company may fit both.
Known gapWe could not read Wis. Stat. 45.01(12) itself — the Wisconsin statute site refuses connections from here — so the subsection references are quoted from WDVA’s own page. Nor does WDVA publish whether certification has to be renewed.
