What it's worth: Residential care for a maintenance fee of half your monthly income

How to claim it

  1. 1Check the level of care first. The home admits only a veteran who is ambulatory and independent in all activities of daily living; it cannot take anyone in need of daily care or skilled assistance. If skilled nursing is what is needed, the state nursing facility at Clarksburg is the other door.
  2. 2Confirm the service length: at least 12 consecutive months of active duty, or the full period called; at least 24 consecutive months if you enlisted after 7 September 1980.
  3. 3Confirm eligibility for care at a federal VA medical centre — the home requires it.
  4. 4Budget on the maintenance fee being half of monthly income, and ask the home what that works out to before the move.

CorrectionThis is not a nursing home. A veteran who needs help with daily living cannot be admitted here — the department runs a separate 120-bed nursing facility at Clarksburg for that. The two are constantly written about as if they were one place.
Worth knowingThe home also runs Project-214, which offers a homeless veteran 60 days at no cost. It is a distinct route into the same building and is worth asking about by name.
Worth knowingThe service test steps up for later enlistments: 12 consecutive months of active duty generally, but 24 consecutive months if you enlisted after 7 September 1980.
