The 20 Percent Utility Discount Has No Veteran Door — Three Others Are Open

The state’s reduced-rate utility programme is reached through food assistance at age sixty or over, supplemental security income at eighteen or over, or the state works programme. Veteran status is not one of the routes, and the energy assistance programme names no veteran preference either.

What this benefit is

The state’s reduced-rate utility programme is reached through food assistance at age sixty or over, supplemental security income at eighteen or over, or the state works programme. Veteran status is not one of the routes, and the energy assistance programme names no veteran preference either.

Who is entitled to it

  • This record answers the question a veteran asks about utility help.
  • Your home is in W. Va.

How to claim it

Deadline: Reduced-rate applications are sent out automatically each October
  1. 1Check yourself against the three published doors rather than looking for a veteran one: food assistance and over sixty; supplemental security income and over eighteen; or the state works programme.
  2. 2A veteran receiving supplemental security income is inside the second door at eighteen, which is the route most likely to fit someone with a disability.
  3. 3The discount is described as 20 percent off gas, off electric from November to March, and off water all year through the participating water utility.
  4. 4Applications for the reduced rate are described as sent out automatically each October. If one does not arrive, ring the local office rather than waiting.
  5. 5Energy assistance itself is a separate programme with income limits by household size, and its published rules name no veteran preference.
  6. 6Ask a county veterans service officer about the veterans department’s own hardship routes if none of the three doors fits.

CorrectionRound-ups of state veteran benefits often list a utility discount. On the agency’s own page the discount has three doors and none of them is veteran status. Some other states do add a veteran supplement to energy assistance; this one, as published, does not.
Known gapThe telephone and broadband lifeline programme, administered separately by the Public Service Commission, was not read this session. A veterans pension route into it could exist without appearing here.

Sources

Why only one source type: An absence is established on the administering agency’s own programme page, which is where a veteran route would appear if there were one.
