How to claim it

  1. 1Pick the easier county. Either the county you live in now or the county where the school was located may award the diploma, and one of them will usually have the records.
  2. 2Take the DD Form 214 to show the service that interrupted the schooling.
  3. 3Bring whatever school record survives, but do not abandon the request if none does — the award is keyed to the service and the era, not to a transcript.
  4. 4A family member can start the enquiry. Boards deal with these requests from relatives regularly, and a posthumous award is a question worth asking rather than assuming.
  5. 5Ask the county veterans service officer to make the approach if the board is unfamiliar with the programme; it is rarely used.
