One vehicle with no licence fees, no plate fees and no excise taxes — behind one of the narrowest gates in this corpus.

What it's worth: No vehicle licence fees, plate fees or excise taxes, on one personal vehicle

  • Commercially registered vehicles are excluded.

Who is entitled to it

  • You receive 100% service-connected compensation expected to last over a year.
  • Your home is in Washington.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Check which route you are on: loss of use of both hands or one foot, a prisoner of war medal, blindness in both eyes from service, or 100% compensation expected to last over a year.
  2. 2You do not have to display the DAV plate to keep the money — the statute lets you choose regular or other special plates and still take the full fee and tax exemption.

Worth knowingThe waiver reaches excise taxes as well as fees, which makes it worth more than the plate-fee waivers most states run.
Worth knowingYou can take the exemption on regular plates — the statute separates the money from the plate design, and a veteran who does not want DAV on the bumper keeps the waiver anyway.
Known gapWe model the 100%-compensation route. The loss-of-use, POW-medal and service-blindness routes are in the statute and are not asked about here — a veteran on one of those routes qualifies regardless of percentage.

Why only one source type: The statute on the legislature's own site states the routes, the waiver and the one-vehicle limit in terms.
