How to claim it

  1. 1Get the eligibility certificate from the Department of Veterans Services — that department, not the small-business certifier, decides service-disabled veteran status.
  2. 2Apply for small, women-owned or minority-owned certification with the Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity. You can do this before or after the veterans department step.
  3. 3Check you meet the small business definition: at least 51% independently owned and controlled by U.S. citizens or legal resident aliens and, with affiliates, 250 or fewer employees or average annual gross receipts of $10 million or less over the previous three years.
  4. 4Allow about 60 business days from a complete application to the initial review, and file recertifications early on the same clock.

CorrectionThe certifier says it plainly: this "is not a separate certification, but a designation of businesses owned by Service-Disabled Veterans." A firm that applies only to the small-business certifier ends up certified without the veteran designation. The eligibility certificate from the veterans department is the step that puts the status on the record.
