How to claim it
Deadline: No later than 30 days before the semester begins- 1Check the two-year obligation first, because it is tested at the wrong end of the calendar: you need two years remaining on your Virginia National Guard obligation as of the LAST day of the last term you are asking to be funded, not as of the day you apply.
- 2Count only the service the statute counts toward that obligation. Time in the inactive National Guard, in the active duty or reserve forces of the United States, or in another jurisdiction’s National Guard does not count. Federal active duty mobilisations and state active duty for the Commonwealth do.
- 3Confirm you have satisfactorily completed the required initial active duty service and are performing duty in accordance with National Guard regulations. Both are conditions in the statute, not administrative nice-to-haves.
- 4Check the institution. The grant reaches public institutions of higher education and accredited nonprofit private institutions offering collegiate or graduate education — but not institutions whose purpose is primarily religious or theological training.
- 5File with the Department of Military Affairs no later than 30 days before the academic semester begins. The department has 30 days to respond.
- 6Expect the money to go to the school, not to you: the department disburses to the institution, which credits your student account.
- 7If you are told the funds are exhausted, ask where your application sat in the queue. The statute rations by order of receipt, which makes the filing date the thing to protect next term.
