What this benefit is

County registers are required to register a DD-214 for the service member named in it or for the holder of the discharge, and the department states the service is provided free of charge.

What it's worth: No charge to register the discharge with the county register

  • The department states the service is provided free of charge.
  • The value is a locally held copy that can be produced when a benefit office asks for one, rather than a saved fee.

Who is entitled to it

  • Registration runs to the service member named in the discharge.
  • The holder of the discharge is named alongside the service member.
  • Your home is in Tennessee.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Take the DD-214 to your county register and ask for it to be registered. The department states county registrars are required to register it.
  2. 2Do not pay. The department describes the service as free of charge.
  3. 3Ask what the office needs from you or your family to release a copy later, and record that answer.
  4. 4If you cannot lay hands on the DD-214 in the first place, take the department’s two routes in order: if you entered military service in Tennessee, request it through the state’s own request form; if you entered from anywhere else, go to the National Personnel Records Center.
  5. 5Do this before a claim is urgent. A registered copy is only useful if it was registered before the day you needed it.

No renewal
Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingRegistering the discharge and obtaining a replacement discharge are different problems with different offices. The county register holds what you bring it; the records centre is where a lost original is reconstructed.
Known gapThe department’s page does not address confidentiality of the registered document, who may obtain copies, or the Tennessee Code section behind it. Ask your county register what protection applies before registering.
