What this benefit is

A servicemember stationed in Tennessee, or their spouse, can work in their licensed profession here on an out-of-state licence while moving to Tennessee licensure — but the exemption ends at the earlier of the out-of-state licence expiring or one year from registering.

What it's worth: Work in your licensed profession on your existing out-of-state licence while you transition

  • This buys working time, not money. It is not a licence and it is not permanent.
  • The out-of-state recognition pathway is cited by the Department of Commerce at TCA § 4-3-1304.
  • § 62-76-105 is NOT a veteran provision. It is an initial-fee waiver for low-income applicants enrolled in public assistance, and an earlier note here speculated otherwise.
  • § 62-76-106, the equivalent-credit provision for military training and experience, is confirmed and is a separate entitlement from this exemption.

Who is entitled to it

  • You serve, so the exemption is open to you if you are stationed here.
  • You are the spouse of a servicemember stationed here.
  • Your home is in Tennessee.

Not sure whether that describes you?

How to claim it

Deadline: Ends at the earlier of licence expiry or one year from registering
  1. 1Confirm the three conditions: a valid out-of-state licence, licensing standards reasonably similar to Tennessee’s, and that licence in good standing.
  2. 2Register for the exemption with the Regulatory Boards Division before you start working.
  3. 3Diary the end date the day you register. You must apply for Tennessee licensure by the earlier of your out-of-state licence expiring or one year from registering for the exemption here — whichever comes first.
  4. 4Start the Tennessee application well before that date. The exemption covers the transition; it does not extend while an application sits in a queue.

CorrectionAn earlier gap note here speculated that § 62-76-105 might be a further veteran benefit. It is a low-income initial-fee waiver for public-assistance enrollees and has nothing to do with military service. The speculation is removed rather than left standing.

Why only one source type: The official Tennessee code is published behind a commercial platform we could not read this session, so the administering division’s own page is the only source read for this record. It is graded tier C accordingly.
