How to claim it
- 1Tick Type 198, "Resident Disabled Veteran Hunting & Fishing License Permanent", on the Miscellaneous Licenses Application and enclose $10. There is one box and one price whichever of the two routes brings you to it.
- 2Enclose certification of recent date from the Veterans Administration. The agency accepts it as separate documents, as a certificate, or as the DD214 — but it must be recent, so an old letter in a drawer may not do.
- 3Check the 30% wartime route before assuming you are too lightly rated. A veteran 30% or more disabled by reason of service in any war reaches the same permanent licence as a veteran at 100% permanent and total.
- 4Post, email or fax it to the licensing division — the agency takes all three, and says applications cannot be made by telephone.
- 5The form carries an undertaking to surrender the licence if you stop being eligible, so read that line before signing.

CorrectionThe wartime route is NOT free, and this record used to say it was. That claim came from reading the two subsections of the code on a reproduction and inferring a fee difference between them. Both state publications say there is no difference: the veterans department describes a single licence "with a one-time $10 fee" for a veteran 100% permanent and total OR 30% or more disabled by reason of service in any war, and the wildlife agency's own application prints one line — Type 198, one-time fee $10 — covering both subsections at once. A veteran who turned up expecting a free licence on the wartime route was sent by us.
Worth knowingWhat is genuinely unusual survives the correction: the 30% wartime door. Most states in this corpus gate a lifetime or permanent licence on a total rating, and a veteran at 30% will not think to ask. Here it reaches the same permanent licence at the same price.
Worth knowingThe wartime route turns on disability arising by reason of service in a war, not merely on having served during a wartime period with an unrelated rating. If your rating is not connected to that service, the 100% route is the one to read.
Known gapThe section itself is still unread on a state host. Tennessee publishes its code through a commercial contractor and capitol.tn.gov refused the connection, so both the fee and the two routes rest on the wildlife agency's application form and the veterans department page rather than on §70-2-104. They agree with each other, which is why this record now follows them rather than the reproduction it used to follow.
