Disabled Veteran Plates — Registration Fee Exempt, Up to Three

A veteran totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected disability may hold up to three Disabled Veteran plates — including wheelchair-symbol variants — and the plates are exempt from the regular motor vehicle registration fee, with no specialty plate fee on top.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply with certification of the total and permanent service-connected disability — the section issues Disabled Veteran and Disabled Veteran (wheelchair) plates, each also in a female-veteran version.
  2. 2No more than three plates may be issued, and the veteran must be one of the registrants of the vehicle.
  3. 3The plates carry no specialty fee and — since Act 216 of 2022 — are exempt from the regular motor vehicle registration fee as well; the act ordered refunds of registration fees collected between 6 May 2022 and its effective date.
  4. 4The wheelchair-symbol variant additionally requires qualifying for accessible-parking privileges.

CorrectionThe 2022 recodification as first enacted made these plates "subject to" the regular registration fee, and older summaries repeat that. Act 216 of 2022 rewrote the subsection to "exempt from" — and ordered the department to refund registration fees collected under the short-lived wording.
Known gapThe DMV's own plate pages refuse automated readers, so operational details beyond the statute (mail-only processing, current form revisions) were not restated from them.
