Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through MyDORWAY with the Department of Revenue — this exemption routes through the state, not the county office, which is the step people get wrong.
  2. 2Work out which year you claim from: the exemption begins with the year the disability occurred or the year you acquired the home, whichever is LATER. If you were already disabled when you bought, it runs from the purchase year, not the disability year.
  3. 3Where the disability year is the later of the two, up to two prior years can be refunded where the tax was paid on time.
  4. 4A surviving spouse claims immediately and in the same manner, whether or not the veteran ever applied — including the spouse of a servicemember killed in action.

CorrectionOlder summaries say house and one acre. SCDOR now states the exemption as the home, up to FIVE acres, and up to two private passenger vehicles — and claimable from the year the disability occurs rather than the year after approval.
Worth knowingA surviving spouse — including of a servicemember killed in action — claims immediately and in the veteran’s manner, regardless of whether the veteran ever filed. That sentence has decided real refunds.
Worth knowingThe start year is the LATER of the disability year and the year the home was acquired. The two acts that built this rule arrived separately — acquisition-year in 2022, disability-year in 2024 — which is why guidance written between them gives only half of it.
