What this benefit is

A grant of up to $5,000 — not a loan — for a sudden hardship beyond your control, decided in as little as 48 hours.

What it's worth: A grant of up to $5,000, sized to the documented need

  • It is a grant with no repayment, not a loan.

Who is entitled to it

  • You face a direct and immediate financial need from circumstances beyond your control.
  • You are serving on qualifying active duty of 30 days or more.
  • You were medically discharged for duty-related reasons within the last four years.
  • Your home is in Pennsylvania.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Document the hardship itself — the programme pays against a documented need, and the paperwork showing the income loss or the emergency is the application’s spine.
  2. 2File with DMVA directly, not with your county office — this is the opposite routing from Veterans Temporary Assistance.
  3. 3Ask about the Guard and reserve windows if you have left service: members in good standing stay eligible for three years after qualifying duty, and duty-related medical discharges for four.

CorrectionThe maximum is now $5,000. The programme began at $2,500 and moved to $3,500 in 2010, and summaries still carry both old figures. The DMVA application page states up to $5,000, as a grant, with no repayment.
Worth knowingDecisions can come in as little as 48 hours, which makes this one of the fastest-paying programmes in this corpus — suited to the emergency it is written for.
Known gapWe model the active-duty and medical-discharge routes. The statute also covers Guard and reserve members in good standing for three years after qualifying duty, state active duty, and certain relatives of eligible members — those routes are real, and we do not yet ask the questions that would resolve them.

Sources

Why only one source type: The department's own application page states the $5,000 maximum, the eligibility categories and the filing route. The implementing guidelines at 43 Pa. Code Chapter 11 predate the current maximum and would understate it.
