How to claim it

  1. 1Check which of the four routes you are on: at least 10% of employees are veterans or on active service; at least 51% veteran or active-service ownership; a corporation whose board is at least 51% veterans or persons on active service; or a business already certified by the federal VA as a service-disabled veteran-owned or veteran-owned small business whose owners meet the Ohio Rev. Code §122.925(A) definition of veteran.
  2. 2File the Unified Application through the Ohio Business Gateway with the supporting documents — incomplete applications are not reviewed, and applications are subject to on-site review by state compliance officers.
  3. 3If you have a pending award that requires certification, or need certification for financing or bonding, file through a regional Minority Business Assistance Centre: that route is fast-tracked to roughly five days.
  4. 4Proof of service is broad here — a DD-214, DD-215, uniformed ID card, VA identification card, military ID, an Ohio driver licence with the armed forces logo, or an NGB-22 all count.

CorrectionThis is not a veteran-owned business certification and calling it one costs firms the award. The first eligibility route asks only that at least 10% of employees are veterans or on active service. A company with no veteran owner at all can hold the certificate; a veteran-owned firm with no other veteran staff still qualifies on the 51%-ownership route. Read which route you are on before you certify.
Worth knowingThere is a streamlined certification path for sole owners holding a state professional licence — accountancy, architecture, law, nursing, engineering, medicine and about twenty others. Its residency condition is waived for this programme specifically: the applicant must be a full-time Ohio resident except for those applying for the veteran certification.
Known gapThe department’s page cites Ohio Rev. Code §122.925 for both the veteran definition and the purchases the preference reaches. The statute server refuses connections, so the section itself is unread and we quote the agency.
