What it's worth: Basic care and skilled nursing at the state home in Lisbon; spouses and surviving spouses admitted on the same footing

  • What a resident pays is not stated on any page that could be read this session — see the gap note before you plan around a figure.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Start with a veterans service officer rather than the home itself — the veterans department directs applicants there to open the file.
  2. 2Meet one of four routes: 30 days of residence in this state, service in a regiment of this state, enrolment in the armed forces as a resident of this state, or marriage to (or survivorship of) someone who meets one of those.
  3. 3The statutory bar is narrow: only a last period of service terminated under dishonorable conditions rules you out. There is no wartime requirement.
  4. 4No one enters before formal application and approval by the board of admissions, so allow time for it.
  5. 5Ask the home directly what your room and board charge would be, and ask separately how basic care and skilled nursing are each priced — the two are charged differently and neither figure is published.

Worth knowingThe statute says admission neither gains nor loses residence: a resident does not become a resident of the county the home sits in, and does not stop being a resident of the county they came from. That matters for county-level benefits that turn on where you live.
Worth knowingOne provision is a survival from an older system and is easy to misread: a member who is not eligible for federal VA care and becomes unable to care for themselves becomes a charge of the county they lived in at admission. It is not a bill to the family.
Known gapThe home's own website returns a 403 to every fetch and renders its rates page only in a live browser, so the resident charge — reportedly a percentage of net income after allowable medical expenses for basic care, with Medicaid available for skilled nursing — is NOT published here. Ask the home for the current formula rather than relying on a summary of it.
