The Veterans Aid Loan — $8,000, and Half Your Interest Back If You Pay On Time

A state loan of up to $8,000 at 8% over as much as 48 months, opened through your county veterans service officer rather than a bank. The part worth knowing: a borrower who repays on schedule may get half the interest back, which is what makes the headline rate misleading in the borrower's favour.

What this benefit is

A state loan of up to $8,000 at 8% over as much as 48 months, opened through your county veterans service officer rather than a bank. The part worth knowing: a borrower who repays on schedule may get half the interest back, which is what makes the headline rate misleading in the borrower's favour.

What it's worth: Up to $8,000 at 8% for up to 48 months, with half the interest returned to a borrower who repays on time

  • The department publishes the ceiling ($8,000), the rate (8%) and the term (up to 48 months). It does not publish a minimum.
  • Un-remarried surviving spouses are named alongside veterans as eligible borrowers.
  • The interest rebate is described as available to borrowers who repay on time — treat it as conditional on the schedule, not automatic.

Who is entitled to it

  • Your discharge characterisation is within the usual range for state veteran programmes.
  • You are in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Go to the county veterans service officer first. The department directs applicants to the VSO rather than to a state office, and the VSO opens the file.
  2. 2Work out what you actually need before you go. This is a loan at 8%, not a grant, and the rebate only helps if you can hold the schedule.
  3. 3Ask the VSO to confirm the eligible uses in writing. The department's page states the terms but not the list of approved purposes, so do not assume your purpose qualifies.
  4. 4Ask specifically how the interest rebate is calculated and what counts as repaying on time — a single late payment is the sort of thing that voids a rebate.
  5. 5If you are an un-remarried surviving spouse, say so at the start; you are named as eligible in your own right and do not need to apply through anyone else.
  6. 6Set up the automatic payment (ACH) if you take the loan, and use the department's payment schedule calculator to see the monthly figure before you sign.

Worth knowingAn 8% state loan looks expensive next to a mortgage and cheap next to the alternatives this fund actually competes with — a payday lender, a credit card cash advance, or a title loan. It is aimed at the veteran a bank has already declined.
Worth knowingThe route through the county service officer is not an administrative detail. It means someone who knows the whole benefit picture looks at your situation before you borrow, and may find you a grant instead of a loan.
Known gapThe programme page publishes the amount, rate and term but not the residency test, the qualifying service dates or the list of approved uses. Ask the county service officer for those three things before you plan around this loan.
