How to claim it

  1. 1Establish which board licenses your profession, then ask that board for its provisional or military application — the route is applied board by board, not centrally.
  2. 2Gather proof of an active licence in good standing from another state or territory held for the preceding two years, and the military document that puts you here: active-duty orders assigning your spouse to a duty station in this state, or proof of assignment to active duty in a foreign country.
  3. 3A veteran's spouse must apply within six months of the veteran's honorable discharge. Missing that window closes this route, so file early rather than after the move settles.
  4. 4Do not pay an application fee for the provisional licence — there is none. If a board asks for one, point to the provision.
  5. 5The boards are under a duty to prioritise and expedite applications from active-duty members, their spouses, veterans, veterans' spouses and surviving spouses, and to keep a record of them. Say in writing that you are one, so your file is counted and moved.

Worth knowingThe three-year term is the striking part. Most expedited-licensure schemes give a temporary permit measured in months, on the theory that you will convert to a full licence quickly. Three years, renewable on continuing orders, covers a whole tour.
CorrectionThe six-month window for a veteran's spouse is a real deadline and it is not obvious: it runs from the veteran's discharge, not from the move or from the job offer. A family that separates from service, spends a few months settling, then looks for work has already lost it.
Known gapThe 2025 provisional-licence terms were read on the veterans department's own legislation page, which describes the cosmetology board's scheme.
