How to claim it

1Pick the home by geography first. The department lists Black Mountain at 62 Lake Eden Road, Kinston at 2150 Hull Road, Salisbury at 1601 Brenner Avenue Building 10, and Kernersville at 1795 Kernersville Medical Parkway.
2Do not plan around Fayetteville. The department states that home is closed because of significant repair needs and structural deficiencies, and that it helped 85 residents relocate to other state veterans homes or a facility of their choice.
3Call the department on 844-624-8387 for eligibility and the admission process. Neither is published on the division pages, and the department directs enquiries to itself.
4Ask what your cover pays before anything else. The homes are approved for Medicare, Medicaid and third party insurance, and the answer to "what will this cost" comes out of that rather than out of a published rate.
5Ask about the on-site VA support. The homes have Veterans Service Officers on staff to assist with VA benefits, which is a practical reason to raise a federal claim at the same time as an admission.
6Ask what clinical services are in the building: nursing under physician direction, an on-staff registered dietician, social work, and physical, occupational and speech therapy, with hospital care through VA Medical Centers or local hospitals.
7Have the DD-214 to hand for the enquiry, as with every other route into state veteran care.
