How to claim it

  1. 1Carry your DD-214, military ID or a veteran-designated licence while fishing. An officer will ask.
  2. 2Check the map of designated Mountain Heritage Trout Waters before you go — outside them the ordinary licence applies.
  3. 3If you live out of state, this still applies to you. It is one of very few that do.
  4. 4Read the season rules and limits separately; the exemption is of the licence only.
  5. 5If you fish other North Carolina waters, ask about the disabled veteran lifetime licence, which is a different benefit.
