What this benefit is

Eight academic semesters at a North Carolina school for the child of a deceased, disabled, combat or POW/MIA veteran — with a residency test that turns on where the parent enlisted.

What it's worth: Eight academic semesters at a North Carolina school

  • The award runs to eight academic semesters and the recipient has eight years in which to use them.
  • What it covers differs between the classes of eligibility and between public and private institutions, and we have not verified those differences.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are the child of the veteran.
  • You are under 25.
  • You are domiciled in and resident in North Carolina.
  • Your veteran parent was a North Carolina resident when they entered service.
  • You were born in North Carolina and have lived here continuously.
  • Your parent's qualifying criteria arose during a period of war.
  • Your home is in North Carolina.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: February 14 for some classes
  1. 1Establish which residency route you are using before anything else — where your parent lived when they enlisted, or where you were born and have lived since.
  2. 2Note the 14 February deadline. It applies where the veteran has less than a 100% disability or served in a combat zone, which covers a large share of applicants.
  3. 3Apply through the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs.

Each term
Claimed per academic term.
Worth knowingEight semesters, but eight YEARS to use them. A student who takes time out does not lose the balance, which is more generous than the term-limited benefits in several other states.
Known gapThe programme runs in several classes of eligibility with different award terms, and the material we read does not set out how the award differs between them or between public and private institutions. We publish the eligibility and say the amount is unverified rather than quoting one that may apply only to one class.

Sources

Why only one source type: The administering division publishes the eligibility, the residency routes and the deadline on its own programme page. The class-by-class award terms are a separate document we have not captured.
