The reduction applies to the APPLICATION fee only. The registration fee, which is bundled into the same total on the licensure forms, is not reduced.

How to claim it

1Work the fee out from the profession-specific chart on the office's military spouse page BEFORE you write the cheque. Half the application portion is reduced; the registration portion is not, and both are quoted as one total on the ordinary licensure form.
2Put the Military Spouse request for expedited processing on TOP of Form 1. Underneath it, the form is handled as an ordinary application and the expediting does not happen.
3Have your educational institution send Form 2 (transcripts) and your licensing state or states send Form 3 (verification) directly to the office. Those two are the usual cause of delay and neither is in your hands once requested.
4Ask about the temporary practice permit at the same time, not later. It carries no fee, runs up to six months or until ten days after any notice that you do not qualify, and lets you practise under the supervision of a licensee authorised here while the documents travel.
5Some professions also require Form 4 for experience. Check which apply to yours before submitting, because a partial file does not start the expedited clock.

CorrectionThe reduction is on the application fee, not on the total. Education Law §6501(2)(d) reduces the initial licensure application fee by one-half, and the office states plainly that the reduction does not extend to the registration fee — which is part of the same total shown on the licensure forms. A spouse who halves the published total and sends that will have underpaid.

Worth knowingThe temporary practice permit is the part that pays the bills. It costs nothing and it means the household does not lose an income for the months a licence-by-endorsement file takes. It is on a separate page from the fee reduction, which is why so few people ask for both.

Worth knowingThe permit's clock is not simply six months: it ends six months from issue, or ten days after a notice that you do not qualify, whichever comes first. If a document comes back short, the runway is ten days, not the rest of the six months.

Known gapThis route runs through the State Education Department, which licenses the professions in its own list. Occupations licensed by other agencies — real estate and the trades among them — have their own military spouse provisions, and none of those were read this session.
