What this benefit is
A spouse relocated here by the military who holds a licence in good standing elsewhere pays half the initial licensure application fee, gets an expedited review, and can be issued a temporary practice permit at no fee — good for up to six months — so the work can start before the file is finished.
What it's worth: Initial licensure application fee reduced by one-half, plus a no-fee temporary practice permit for up to six months
- The reduction applies to the APPLICATION fee only. The registration fee, which is bundled into the same total on the licensure forms, is not reduced.
- The out-of-state licence must be in good standing in a state whose requirements are substantially equivalent to those here.
- The temporary permit requires practice under the supervision of a licensee authorised here.
Who is entitled to it
- You are the spouse of a servicemember.
- Your home is in New York.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.
How to claim it
- 1Work the fee out from the profession-specific chart on the office's military spouse page BEFORE you write the cheque. Half the application portion is reduced; the registration portion is not, and both are quoted as one total on the ordinary licensure form.
- 2Put the Military Spouse request for expedited processing on TOP of Form 1. Underneath it, the form is handled as an ordinary application and the expediting does not happen.
- 3Have your educational institution send Form 2 (transcripts) and your licensing state or states send Form 3 (verification) directly to the office. Those two are the usual cause of delay and neither is in your hands once requested.
- 4Ask about the temporary practice permit at the same time, not later. It carries no fee, runs up to six months or until ten days after any notice that you do not qualify, and lets you practise under the supervision of a licensee authorised here while the documents travel.
- 5Some professions also require Form 4 for experience. Check which apply to yours before submitting, because a partial file does not start the expedited clock.
