The state military division pays tuition up to the state university rate per semester for a Guard member in good standing reading for an undergraduate degree. Two things decide whether you get it: six credit hours a semester, and an application in by 15 August for the autumn or 15 December for the spring.

How to claim it

Deadline: 15 August for the autumn semester; 15 December for the spring

1Put the two dates in your calendar now — 15 August and 15 December. They are hard deadlines against a semester that has not started, which is exactly the kind of date people miss.
2File the federal aid paperwork first. The application requires it along with the state tuition award certificate, and a member who starts the federal forms in August will not make the deadline.
3Check your credit load before you register. Six credit hours a semester, or four a quarter, is the floor — dropping to a single course after the fact puts the award at risk.
4Count your residency. The programme states 186 days of residence before use, with active-duty time excluded, which is a longer runway than most members assume after a move.
5Submit through your branch education service representative rather than to a central office. Army and Air route separately.
6Keep good standing in view as an eligibility condition, not just a military one. Missed drills are the quiet way a member becomes ineligible mid-year.
