Registration and Plate Fees Waived — on Three Narrow Routes

New York waives registration and plate fees on three routes, and only three: a vehicle acquired with VA automobile assistance under Federal Title 38 chapter 39, a Congressional Medal of Honor custom plate, or a former prisoner of war custom plate. A service-connected disability on its own does not reach it. The VA-assisted route covers one vehicle — a passenger car, suburban or light truck of 20,000 lbs or less unladen, used exclusively to carry passengers — on form MV-1E first time and MV-1G to renew, and it cannot be renewed online.

What this benefit is

New York waives registration and plate fees on three routes, and only three: a vehicle acquired with VA automobile assistance under Federal Title 38 chapter 39, a Congressional Medal of Honor custom plate, or a former prisoner of war custom plate. A service-connected disability on its own does not reach it. The VA-assisted route covers one vehicle — a passenger car, suburban or light truck of 20,000 lbs or less unladen, used exclusively to carry passengers — on form MV-1E first time and MV-1G to renew, and it cannot be renewed online.

What it's worth: Registration and plate fees waived

  • A service-connected disability rating does not by itself qualify. The route is the VA automobile grant under Federal Title 38, chapter 39 — assistance towards buying the vehicle.
  • The VA-assisted route is limited to one vehicle, which must be a passenger car, suburban or light truck of 20,000 lbs or less unladen and used exclusively for carrying passengers.
  • Form MV-1E establishes it and MV-1G renews it. Renewal cannot be done online, which catches people who renew everything else that way.
  • The Medal of Honor and former prisoner of war routes run through the custom plates rather than through a disability rating.
  • There is no age condition on the former prisoner of war route.

  • You acquired the vehicle with VA automobile assistance.

CorrectionThis record used to offer the exemption to any veteran with a service-connected disability, and to add an age-62 condition to the former prisoner of war route. Neither is what the DMV applies. The exemption runs on a VA-assisted vehicle, a Medal of Honor plate or a former prisoner of war plate, with no age test.
