What this benefit is

An honorably discharged veteran holding a post-August-1990 campaign medal — Southwest Asia, Global War on Terror, Iraq, Afghanistan or another armed-conflict medal — studies at state-funded institutions with tuition and required fees covered and books reimbursed, from undergraduate through doctoral study, capped at the highest in-state undergraduate tuition.

What it's worth: Tuition and required fees covered, books reimbursed — undergraduate, master's or doctoral — capped at the highest in-state undergraduate tuition

  • Awarded first come, first served against the fund each year; renewable on satisfactory progress.

Who is entitled to it

  • You were honorably discharged, with a qualifying campaign medal.
  • You entered service from this state or have ten years of residency.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Check the medal gate: a campaign or service medal for armed conflict after 1 August 1990 — Southwest Asia, Global War on Terror, Iraq or Afghanistan campaign medals among them — shown on a certified DD-214 with the honorable discharge.
  2. 2Check the residency door: a resident at original entry into service, or ten or more years living in the state.
  3. 3Apply to the department, not the school — awards are first come, first served against the year's fund, and renew on satisfactory progress. Graduate study qualifies, but the dollar cap stays at the highest in-state undergraduate tuition.
  4. 4Vietnam-era veterans have their own parallel scholarship: a Vietnam Campaign Medal from the 1964–75 window, the same residency doors, tuition and books at state schools — and at non-state schools up to the highest state-school resident tuition.

Worth knowingThe two scholarships are the medal-gated tier of a state that also runs broad general-law tuition programmes; a veteran without a campaign medal should look at those before concluding nothing applies.

Why only one source type: The department's own benefits page states both scholarships' medal gates, residency doors, coverage and caps.
