What this benefit is

The Regulation and Licensing Department waives the licensing fee for the first three years and undertakes to issue within 30 days of a complete application — for veterans, service members, their spouses and their dependent children.

What it's worth: No licensing fee for the first three years

  • Shown as a range because the waived fee is whatever the occupation charges, and the department licenses professions whose fees differ by an order of magnitude.
  • The waiver covers three years, not a single issuance — that is the part most summaries shorten away.

Who is entitled to it

  • The route reaches the service member or veteran, their spouse, a surviving spouse and dependent children.
  • Your home is in New Mexico.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Hold a current licence at the same level, in good standing, from another jurisdiction. Every category on this route starts there.
  2. 2A veteran sends proof of honourable discharge — a DD 214, DD 215, DD 265, DD 257, NGB 22, military ID, a veteran designation on a state ID, or a VA-issued Veteran ID Card.
  3. 3A service member sends the military orders. A spouse of an active service member sends the orders and the marriage licence.
  4. 4A spouse of a deceased service member sends the decedent's DD 214 and the marriage licence.
  5. 5A dependent child sends orders listing the child, or orders plus a birth certificate, federal tax return or other documentation establishing dependency.
  6. 6Hold the department to the 30 days. It undertakes to issue an expedited military licence no more than 30 days from completion of the application.

CorrectionThe waiver runs three years, not one issuance. A licensee who budgets for a renewal fee in year two is budgeting for a fee the department says it does not charge.
Worth knowingThe waiver applies across every occupation the department licenses. A profession licensed by a board outside the department is outside this page.
Worth knowingDependent children of a service member are covered — a category almost no other state's military licensing route includes.

Sources

Why only one source type: The department's own military resources page carries the eligible categories, the three-year fee waiver, the 30-day issuance undertaking and the documentation list for each category. The Uniform Licensing Act section behind it has not been read this session and is therefore not cited.
