At 50%: Two Vehicles Registered for Nothing at All

A New Mexico veteran with a 50% service-connected disability pays NO FEE — including the ordinary registration fee — for plates on UP TO TWO VEHICLES, motorcycles included. That is the whole registration bill waived, not just the specialty plate charge, which is what most states mean. You may take ANY STANDARD PLATE DESIGN free rather than being confined to a disabled veteran design, and the wheelchair symbol is available if you are eligible for a handicapped placard.

What this benefit is

A New Mexico veteran with a 50% service-connected disability pays NO FEE — including the ordinary registration fee — for plates on UP TO TWO VEHICLES, motorcycles included. That is the whole registration bill waived, not just the specialty plate charge, which is what most states mean. Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Take proof of the 50% service-connected disability to an MVD office.
  2. 2Ask for the waiver on BOTH vehicles if you have two — the entitlement covers two, and only one is usually offered.
  3. 3Ask which plate designs are available free. You are not limited to the disabled veteran design.
  4. 4If you need the wheelchair symbol, ask about handicapped placard eligibility at the same time.
  5. 5Motorcycles count toward the two, so decide which vehicles to put the waiver on.

Worth knowingNew Mexico also has a two-thirds registration reduction for veterans generally. At 50% this waiver is better, and the two should not be confused.
