What it's worth: Nursing care across 948 beds statewide, charged on ability to pay

  • Paramus holds 336 beds, Menlo Park 312 and Vineland 300. The Department states only that residents pay according to ability based on income; it does not publish a rate.
  • The care maintenance fee is computed under N.J.A.C. 5A:5, which the Department publishes as a PDF our tools could not read. We publish the eligibility rules we could read and not a fee formula we could not.

  • The discharge was honorable, or general under honorable conditions.

How to claim it

  1. 1Note that peacetime service counts. The homes take veterans honorably discharged from U.S. war OR peacetime service, so a veteran without a wartime period is not shut out.
  2. 2If you are the spouse, widow or widower, check both gates before applying: at least 50 years of age, and married to the veteran for not less than ten years.
  3. 3A Gold Star parent — a parent of a member of the military killed in action during a period of war — may be admitted in their own right.
  4. 4Two years of New Jersey residence immediately before applying is a preference rather than a bar, so apply and say how long you have lived here.
  5. 5Ask the admissions office how the care maintenance fee will be computed on your income before you commit.

Worth knowingThe spouse test is two conditions, not one: age 50 or over AND at least ten years of marriage. Both are stated on the Department’s own admissions page and neither is obvious from the general eligibility language.
