The Veteran Marker on Your Licence — and What It Is Not Good For

New Jersey will put a veteran designation on a driver licence or non-driver ID for anyone honorably discharged from active service, proved by a DD-214 or federal activation orders under 10 U.S.C. 672 or 12301. Read the limitation carefully, because New Jersey states it plainly and most states do not: THE MARKER IS NOT VALID PROOF OF VETERAN STATUS WHERE A STATUTE REQUIRES DOCUMENTATION. It is convenient at a shop counter and it will not do for a property tax deduction or a licence application. Keep the DD-214 for those. The fee is not published.

What this benefit is

What it's worth: Veteran designation on a New Jersey licence or non-driver ID

  • Available on a driver licence or non-driver ID.
  • Proof: a DD-214, or federal activation orders under 10 U.S.C. 672 or 12301.
  • THE MARKER IS NOT VALID PROOF OF VETERAN STATUS WHERE A STATUTE REQUIRES DOCUMENTATION. New Jersey states this expressly.
  • So it will not serve for the property tax deduction, the peddler licence, or anything else with a statutory documentation requirement.
  • THE FEE IS NOT ESTABLISHED from the sources reviewed.
  • Its use is everyday convenience — retailer discounts and the like.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • Your discharge was honorable.
  • New Jersey licences and IDs.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Take a DD-214, or federal activation orders under 10 U.S.C. 672 or 12301, to an MVC agency.
  2. 2Ask what the fee is — it is not published.
  3. 3Keep your DD-214 accessible afterwards. The marker does not replace it where a statute requires documentation.
  4. 4Request it at renewal to avoid paying for a duplicate licence if a fee applies.
  5. 5Do not rely on it at an assessor's office or a licensing board.

Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingThis limitation is probably true in other states too and simply unstated. New Jersey's candour is the useful thing here: treat a licence marker anywhere as convenience, not evidence.
