Fifty-One Licensing Boards, and Someone Whose Job Is to Help You Through Them

New Jersey's 51 professional and occupational boards, all under the Division of Consumer Affairs, must facilitate recognition of military training, education and experience toward licensure. The part that is genuinely unusual is the support: DCA provides DEDICATED ONE-TO-ONE APPLICATION HELP for service members, veterans and spouses, at DCAMilitary@dca.njoag.gov or 973-504-6210. A named contact who deals with this every day is worth more than the statutory duty on its own, because the duty is where most states stop.

What this benefit is

New Jersey's 51 professional and occupational boards, all under the Division of Consumer Affairs, must facilitate recognition of military training, education and experience toward licensure. The part that is genuinely unusual is the support: DCA provides DEDICATED ONE-TO-ONE APPLICATION HELP for service members, veterans and spouses, at DCAMilitary@dca.njoag.gov or 973-504-6210. A named contact who deals with this every day is worth more than the statutory duty on its own, because the duty is where most states stop.

What it's worth: Military training recognised toward licensure, with one-to-one application support

  • All 51 professional and occupational boards under the Division of Consumer Affairs are covered.
  • Boards MUST FACILITATE RECOGNITION of military training, education and experience toward licensure.
  • DEDICATED ONE-TO-ONE APPLICATION SUPPORT: DCAMilitary@dca.njoag.gov, 973-504-6210.
  • The support reaches SPOUSES as well as service members and veterans.
  • NO RESIDENCY TEST IS STATED.
  • How much credit is given differs by board, so the saving cannot be stated as one figure.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are in one of the groups this reaches.
  • You are applying for a professional licence.
  • New Jersey licensing boards.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Email DCAMilitary@dca.njoag.gov or call 973-504-6210 BEFORE applying. They do this daily and your board may not.
  2. 2Have your Joint Services Transcript or equivalent training records ready.
  3. 3Map your training against the board's stated requirements yourself — the support helps, but the mapping is where the outcome is decided.
  4. 4Spouses should use the same contact; the support is not limited to the member.
  5. 5If a board refuses credit, ask which requirement was assessed and why, in writing, and take it back to DCA.

Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingUse the contact before the application, not after a refusal. A board's first answer is much easier to shape than its second.
