  • The Department states the member is authorised to attend any New Jersey public college or university tuition free for undergraduate and graduate studies, and that soldiers may take 16 credits per semester.
  • The weight stands for two semesters of in-state public tuition at a New Jersey four-year institution. What it is worth to you depends entirely on which institution you enrol at.
  • Tuition is not the whole bill. The Department describes a tuition benefit, not a fees, books or room and board benefit, so budget those separately.

How to claim it

Deadline: Per semester — set by the institution and the education services office
  1. 1Talk to your unit education services office before you register — the paperwork runs through the Guard as well as the school.
  2. 2Pick a New Jersey public college or university. The benefit is described for public institutions in this State; a private or out-of-state school is a different conversation.
  3. 3Plan around 16 credits a semester. That is the stated ceiling, and it is enough for a normal full-time load but not for an overloaded one.
  4. 4Ask about graduate study explicitly. It is included here, and staff at a school used to undergraduate-only Guard programmes elsewhere may not know that.
  5. 5Ask the financial aid office how the benefit interacts with federal education benefits before you draw on both — the order they are applied in changes what is left.
  6. 6If you are being medically discharged or retired as a result of an injury or illness from service, ask whether your eligibility continues after separation rather than assuming it ends.

CorrectionGraduate study is inside this benefit, not outside it. The Department’s own wording is "undergraduate and graduate studies", which is wider than most state Guard tuition programmes and is the part members most often leave on the table.
Known gapThe Department describes the benefit as mandated by New Jersey state law but does not name the statute on the pages we could read, and the Legislature’s statute viewer was not reachable to us this session. We therefore publish no section number and no statutory conditions — including whether initial active duty training must be completed first, and whether good standing is tested. Ask your education services office for the current eligibility memorandum.
Known gapThe pages we read speak of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard separately. We could not read a single page stating identical terms for both components, so an airman should confirm the credit ceiling and the institution list with their own education office.
