Town-Voted Credits, Up to $5,000

New Hampshire's credits are town-voted: up to $750 for wartime service, and for service-connected total disability a standard credit of $700 which a town may vote up to $5,000 — the same veteran is worth different money in different towns. A surviving spouse is covered under the same sections. The All Veterans' Credit and the combat service credit are alternatives to the wartime credit, not additions to it.

What this benefit is

New Hampshire's credits are town-voted: up to $750 for wartime service, and for service-connected total disability a standard credit of $700 which a town may vote up to $5,000 — the same veteran is worth different money in different towns. A surviving spouse is covered under the same sections. The All Veterans' Credit and the combat service credit are alternatives to the wartime credit, not additions to it.

What it's worth: A tax credit of up to $5,000 a year at total disability, set by town vote

  • RSA 72:35, as amended effective 2025 (2025, 15:1), sets a standard total-disability credit of $700, which a town may vote upward to any amount from $701 to $5,000.
  • RSA 72:28 wartime credits run from $50 to $750, again by town vote.
  • A surviving spouse is covered under RSA 72:28 and RSA 72:35 on the same town-voted basis.
  • RSA 72:28-b, the All Veterans' Credit, and RSA 72:28-c, the combat service credit, are alternatives — they are mutually exclusive with the wartime credit rather than stacking on it.
  • Because every amount is a town vote within a statutory range, no single figure is right statewide. The band is what the statute fixes; the number is your town's.

Who is entitled to it

  • You meet the permanent and total test.
  • You own and occupy the home.
  • Your home is in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: April 15
  1. 1File Form PA-29 with the DD214 by April 15.
  2. 2Ask what YOUR town has voted — the statute sets ranges and each town picks its figures. A figure quoted on another town's website is that town's, not yours.
  3. 3Ask which credit you are being given. The All Veterans' Credit (RSA 72:28-b) and the combat service credit (RSA 72:28-c) are alternatives to the wartime credit, so claiming one rules out the others.
  4. 4A surviving spouse should claim in their own right under RSA 72:28 or 72:35 rather than assuming the credit lapsed with the veteran.
  5. 5New Hampshire also levies no tax on wages, so the property credits are the main lever here.

CorrectionThe optional total-disability credit ceiling was published here as $4,000. RSA 72:35 as amended effective 2025 sets the standard credit at $700 and the town-adopted range at $701 to $5,000.

Sources

Why only one source type: The statute is the whole of the statewide rule: it fixes the bands and leaves the amount to each town's vote, so there is no statewide operating page that could give a figure. This record previously cited one town's web page as the authority, which made that town's adopted numbers look like the state's. Your own town's assessing office is the operating source, and it differs for every reader.
