How to claim it

  1. 1Check when your licence renews before making a trip. Adding the indicator at renewal is free; adding it outside costs $3 for the replacement card.
  2. 2Bring proof of honorable discharge as the department defines it. The DD214 is the ordinary proof.
  3. 3Use the right application form for the card you hold — driver licence, commercial licence and non-driver ID each have their own.
  4. 4Once the indicator is on the card, use the card. Its purpose is identification for state benefits and services, which is exactly the situation where producing a discharge certificate is impractical.
  5. 5Ask about the motor vehicle fee exemptions in the same visit if any of the disability or prisoner-of-war routes apply to you. They are administered by the same agency and nobody joins them up for you.

Worth knowingThe $3 is not the point; the timing is. A veteran who checks their renewal date first pays nothing, and a veteran who walks in on a whim pays for a card they were going to replace in eight months anyway.
Known gapThe department does not say whether the indicator itself unlocks any particular state benefit, or whether offices are obliged to accept it as proof. It describes the indicator as being for identification purposes, which is short of an entitlement.
