How to claim it

  1. 1Name the compact by name at the enrolment meeting. School offices deal with it rarely, and a parent who says "we are a military family covered by the interstate compact" gets a different conversation than one who does not.
  2. 2Ask for hand-carried unofficial records to be accepted for placement while the official transcript follows. Record transfer delay is the first thing the compact is written to solve.
  3. 3Raise extracurricular deadlines immediately, not later. Missed try-outs and application windows are expressly within the compact's purposes and are the losses that hurt a teenager most.
  4. 4For a student in their final years, put graduation requirements on the table at the first meeting. On-time graduation is a stated purpose, and a course-sequence mismatch found in the spring term is very hard to fix.
  5. 5Ask the district who their compact point of contact is. The compact provides for administrative rules and for information sharing between member states and schools, which means someone is responsible.
  6. 6If a school says no, do not treat that as the end. The compact provides for enforcement of its rules, so escalate to the state education agency rather than negotiating with the school office alone.

Worth knowingThis is the only benefit in this state's corpus whose value lands entirely on a child rather than on the service member. A single mishandled transfer can cost a year of school, and that is a larger number than most of the cash benefits recorded here.
CorrectionThe compact is not a discretionary courtesy from a friendly school. It provides for administrative rules and for their enforcement, which is why escalating past the school office is a legitimate step rather than an aggressive one.
