The state family caregiver programme is delivered through the National Family Caregiver Support Program by the Bureau of Adult and Aging Care Services together with the Aging and Disability Resource Centers.
Services listed are information about community programmes and local resources; help assessing caregiving needs, identifying options and reaching local providers; individual counselling and access to support groups; education and training to develop caregiving skills; and respite care giving a temporary break for eligible full-time family caregivers.
For some caregivers the department states there are limited additional services that may include chore services, assistive equipment, home modifications and transportation services.
The services are available to caregivers over 18 caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, for adults over 60, for parents of adult children with disabilities, and to grandparents and other relatives over 55 raising minor relatives.
Eligible grandparents and relatives raising children can receive respite such as in-home childcare, after-school programmes and camps, with limited funds for items such as school clothing and supplies.

How to claim it

1Call 1-866-634-9412 first. One number reaches the caregiver programme, the resource centre and the veterans resource list, which saves the usual round of transfers.
2Do not go looking for a state veteran-directed care programme. The aging network’s own veterans page does not list one, and the time is better spent on the federal caregiver programmes and on this general caregiver programme in parallel.
3Check which caregiver category you fall into. The programme reaches caregivers over 18 looking after someone with dementia or an adult over 60, parents of adult children with disabilities, and relatives over 55 raising minor children — the categories, not a diagnosis, decide the door.
4Ask specifically about the "limited services" tier. Chore services, assistive equipment, home modifications and transport are available to some caregivers and are almost never volunteered in a first conversation.
5If you are a grandparent raising a grandchild, say so plainly. That route carries its own respite options — in-home childcare, after-school programmes and camps — plus limited funds for school clothing and supplies.
6Ask the state division of veterans services the same question separately. It is a different agency from the aging network, and it is the body that assists residents in securing state and federal entitlements.
7Treat the state veterans home as the long-term care answer rather than the caregiver answer. It is a custodial facility, not a respite or in-home support programme.

CorrectionThe aging network’s veterans page is the finding here, and it establishes something by what it does not contain. Every entry on it is federal, charitable or a residential facility. There is no state-funded caregiver stipend or veteran-directed care programme to apply for, and a family spending weeks searching for one is chasing something that is not there.

Worth knowingThe caregiver programme’s eligibility runs on categories rather than on the care recipient’s service. A veteran over 60, or a veteran of any age with dementia, brings their caregiver inside it — the service history is simply not part of the test.

Known gapNeither page publishes a funding amount, a respite hours cap, or an income test for the caregiver programme. Ask the resource centre what is authorised in your case before booking a provider.
