How to claim it

  1. 1Get on the interest list first. The northern home will place a name on it against nothing more than a DD214 or a VA demographic sheet sent to the admissions director.
  2. 2Establish the service-connected rating before you budget. At 70 to 100 percent the home records the cost as covered at 100 percent by the VA; below that, private pay begins at the published daily rate.
  3. 3If a spouse or Gold Star parent is moving in, price their side separately — the VA subsidy covers eligible veterans and not spouses.
  4. 4Ask about Medicaid if long-term private pay is not sustainable: the northern home holds Medicaid-certified beds for long-term care.
  5. 5Ask which community the applicant belongs in — short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, or the secure memory care community. The homes distinguish memory concerns without wandering, which can be cared for in the long-term community, from a history of wandering, which cannot.
