What this benefit is

Ten points on a passing examination grade in Nevada classified service — open competitive and promotional alike — with widow and widower tiers of their own. A current member of the Nevada National Guard has a tier too: five points on a passing grade, on production of a letter of recommendation from the member's unit commanding officer. The tiers do not stack.

What it's worth: 10 points added to a passing examination grade — 5 for a serving Guard member

  • Points attach to a PASSING grade — the preference moves rank, not eligibility.
  • NRS 284.260 gives a current member of the Nevada National Guard five points on a passing grade.
  • The Guard tier requires a letter of recommendation from the member's unit commanding officer. It is a condition of the five points, not a formality.
  • The tiers do not stack. A person who falls into more than one category takes the highest, not the sum.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are an honorably separated veteran.
  • Your home is in this state.

How to claim it

  1. 1Claim the preference with the examination — it applies to open competitive AND promotional examinations in the classified service.
  2. 2Surviving spouses claim their own tier: ten points where the member was killed in the line of duty, five as the widow or widower of a veteran.
  3. 3Hold multiple qualifying statuses? Only the single most beneficial preference applies — they do not stack.
