How to claim it

  1. 1Register on the Nebraska Veterans’ Registry first. Registration is the eligibility gate here, not just a mailing list, and an unregistered veteran is outside the programme.
  2. 2Adopt from a shelter or rescue licensed by the state Department of Agriculture. An unlicensed rescue cannot be paid however good it is.
  3. 3Get preauthorization BEFORE the adoption is final: the completed application and an itemised estimate go in, and the authorisation comes back. Adopting first and asking afterwards is the way this goes wrong.
  4. 4After the adoption completes, the shelter submits final billing and the department pays it.
  5. 5Ask whether funding is currently available before you plan around it. The programme is funded entirely by the sale of its own licence plate and by donations, and the department says it runs only as funding allows.
