What this benefit is

A Nebraska veteran enrolled in the state Military and Veterans’ Registry may have a Veteran designation printed on their driver’s licence or state ID. Added at the time of a renewal it costs nothing extra; asked for mid-cycle it is a replacement document and the replacement fee is charged. The registry must be confirmed and the driver record updated, which takes at least one business day.

What it's worth: No additional fee when added at renewal; the replacement document fee applies otherwise

  • The DMV states there is no additional fee at renewal and that a replacement document fee is charged otherwise, but does not print the replacement figure on this page, so no dollar amount is claimed.
  • The designation itself carries no discount. Its value is proving veteran status at a counter without carrying a DD214, which several Nebraska programmes accept.
  • The weight is low on purpose — it is a convenience with a timing trick, not money.

Who is entitled to it

  • The designation is printed on the veteran’s own licence or ID.
  • You are in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Register first. Enrolment in the Nebraska Military and Veterans’ Registry through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs is the precondition; the DMV cannot add the designation to a record it cannot see.
  2. 2Wait at least one business day after the registration is confirmed. The DMV says the driver record must be updated to reflect the registration before the designation can be added.
  3. 3Time it to your renewal. Added at renewal there is NO additional fee. Ask for it in between and you are applying for a replacement document, and the replacement fee is charged.
  4. 4You can do the replacement online or at any driver licensing office once the registry shows you.
  5. 5Questions about the registry itself go to the veterans department on 402-471-2458, not to the DMV — the two offices split this benefit between them and each will send you to the other for the half it does not own.
  6. 6While you are in the registry, take the other two things it unlocks: the Military Honor licence plate, and — from 1 January 2026 — the disabled veteran motor vehicle tax and fee exemption on one vehicle.

CorrectionThe designation is described everywhere as free. It is free only if you ask for it at renewal. The DMV’s own page says that asking in between makes it a replacement document with the replacement fee attached — which is a real cost for a veteran who has just registered and does not renew for four more years.
Worth knowingThe designation is not a REAL ID marker and confers no driving privilege. What it does is let a veteran prove status at a counter — Game and Parks accepts it in place of a DD214 for the $5 small game permit, for instance — without carrying a discharge document around.
Known gapThe DMV publishes no Neb. Rev. Stat. section on this page and no replacement fee figure, and nebraskalegislature.gov refuses every connection from here, so neither is claimed. Whether the designation survives a move out of state and back, and whether it can be added to a commercial licence on the same terms, were not established.
