A Nebraska resident serving in a Nebraska-based Active Selected Reserve unit can have 75% of tuition credited at a University of Nebraska campus, a state college or a community college — 50% for a graduate or professional degree. How to claim it

Deadline: Applications are accepted until the 200 new places for the calendar year are taken
  1. 1Apply early in the calendar year. Two hundred new applications is the whole allocation, and a late application in a busy year meets a closed programme rather than a waiting list.
  2. 2Three conditions: current Nebraska residence and membership of a Nebraska-based Active Selected Reserve unit; an agreement to serve a minimum of three years in the reserves; and a course of study leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.
  3. 3Renew every year. Applications must be submitted annually to keep eligibility, and continuing students file a Re-certification Form with their school before each subsequent term.
  4. 4Check your institution is on the list: the five University of Nebraska campuses, the three state colleges — Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State — and the six community college systems.
  5. 5There is no lifetime limit on the credit for a qualifying member, which makes it usable across a long part-time programme.
  6. 6This is not the Waiver of Tuition. That programme is for DEPENDANTS of eligible veterans and waives 100% of tuition; this one is for the serving reservist and credits a percentage. A household can be looking at both.

CorrectionNebraska’s education benefit is almost always described as the Waiver of Tuition for dependants. That leaves serving reservists believing the state offers them nothing. It offers them this — but with a hard cap of 200 new places a year, which is the detail that decides whether an application succeeds.
Worth knowingThe three-year reserve commitment is a condition of eligibility rather than a repayment clause on the face of the department’s page. Ask what happens if service ends early before assuming there is nothing to repay.
