Two Hundred Health Professions: the Initial Licence Fee Is Waived, and Your Training Counts

Since 1 January 2020 Nebraska has waived the INITIAL licence fee for honorably discharged veterans across the 200-plus health professions DHHS licenses, and for spouses. Separately, military education or training from active, Reserve or National Guard service must be credited toward the licensure requirements where it is substantially similar. The one fee that is NOT waivable is the fingerprint background check. Two hundred professions is wider than people assume — it is not just nursing and medicine but the whole DHHS licensure book.

What it's worth: Initial licence fee waived across 200+ DHHS-licensed health professions

  • THE FINGERPRINT BACKGROUND CHECK FEE IS NOT WAIVABLE.
  • Applies across MORE THAN 200 DHHS-licensed health professions — much wider than doctors and nurses.
  • Separately, military education or training from active, Reserve or National Guard service must be credited where SUBSTANTIALLY SIMILAR, under Neb. Rev. Stat. 38-1,141.
  • The fee saved differs by profession, so no single figure applies.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Check the DHHS licensure list before assuming your occupation is outside it — there are more than 200.
  2. 2Claim the veteran fee waiver on the initial application. It is not applied automatically.
  3. 3Budget for the fingerprint background check. That fee is not waived.
  4. 4Submit your Joint Services Transcript and ask for military training to be credited as substantially similar.
  5. 5Spouses should claim in their own right — the waiver is not limited to the veteran.

Worth knowingThe training credit and the fee waiver are separate provisions. Ask for both; a veteran who only claims the fee waiver may still be made to repeat coursework.
