Military Honor Plates — $5 Numeric, $40 Message, and No Limit on How Many Vehicles

A veteran or serving member enrolled in the Nebraska Military and Veterans’ Registry may take Military Honor plates in place of regular county plates. Numeric plates cost $5, all of which goes to the Veteran Cemetery Cash Fund; message plates cost $40, of which $30 goes to the same fund. There is no limit on how many vehicles or trailers may carry them.

What this benefit is

A veteran or serving member enrolled in the Nebraska Military and Veterans’ Registry may take Military Honor plates in place of regular county plates. Numeric plates cost $5, all of which goes to the Veteran Cemetery Cash Fund; message plates cost $40, of which $30 goes to the same fund. There is no limit on how many vehicles or trailers may carry them.

  • This is a specialty plate with a modest fee, not a fee waiver, and it is recorded because most of the money returns to veterans: $5 of $5 on the numeric plate and $30 of $40 on the message plate go to the Veteran Cemetery Cash Fund.
  • The fee is due at initial application and renewed annually in the same month as the vehicle registration.
  • The weight is low deliberately — the plate costs money rather than saving it. Its practical value is identification and the fact that most of the fee is earmarked for the state veterans cemeteries.

How to claim it

  1. 1Register first. Enrolment in the Nebraska Military and Veterans’ Registry through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs is a precondition, and registry applications take up to 48 hours after approval to become visible to the DMV.
  2. 2The branch on the plate must be the branch you served in: Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, Space Force, Army or Air National Guard, or a reserve component.
  3. 3Campaign medal recipients qualify separately — Afghanistan Campaign, Iraq Campaign, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary, Southwest Asia Service, Vietnam Service and Inherent Resolve Campaign.
  4. 4Choose the plate type on price: numeric at $5, message at $40. Both renew annually in the same month as the vehicle registration.
  5. 5There is no limit on the number of motor vehicles or trailers you own or lease that may carry a Military Honor plate.
  6. 6While you are in the registry, claim the two things that come with it: the "Veteran" designation on your Nebraska driver’s licence or ID, and — from 1 January 2026 — the disabled veteran motor vehicle tax and fee exemption on one vehicle.

CorrectionThe Military Honor plate is not free and is not a registration discount. It replaces the regular county plate for a fee of its own. Nebraska’s actual vehicle money benefit is the separate motor vehicle tax and fee exemption for disabled and blind veterans, which is a different programme with a different application.
Worth knowingThe registry is the gate to several things at once, which is why it is worth doing even for a veteran who does not want a plate: it unlocks the licence designation, the plate, and visibility to the DMV for the tax exemption.
Known gapThe DMV publishes no statutory citation on its plate page, and nebraskalegislature.gov refuses requests from here, so no Neb. Rev. Stat. section is claimed for the plate itself.
