Disabled Veteran Plates Free at Any Rating — and Free to Replace

Missouri gives one complimentary set of Disabled Veteran plates to an honorably discharged resident with a service-connected disability. ANY rating qualifies. No specialty fee, no transfer fee, no processing fee and no replacement fee applies to that set; further sets are charged at the standard rates. The VA letter must be LESS THAN A YEAR OLD and must come directly from the VA — a photocopy of an older letter is refused, and that is the single most common reason applications bounce. The wheelchair-accessibility symbol and disabled-parking privilege need a separate physician's statement.

What it's worth: One complimentary set of DV plates, with no specialty, transfer, processing or replacement fee

  • ANY service-connected disability qualifies. No minimum percentage.
  • ONE set is complimentary. Additional sets are charged at standard fees.
  • No specialty, transfer, processing or replacement fee on the complimentary set — so a damaged plate is replaced free.
  • THE VA LETTER MUST BE LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD and must come DIRECTLY FROM THE VA.
  • Missouri residency and an honorable discharge are required.
  • The wheelchair-accessibility symbol and the disabled-parking privilege require a SEPARATE PHYSICIAN'S STATEMENT — the plates alone do not confer them.
  • The ordinary registration fee and any property tax on the vehicle are not addressed by this.

  • Your discharge was honorable.
  • You have a service-connected disability.
  • Missouri vehicle registration.

How to claim it

  1. 1Request a FRESH VA benefits letter. One over a year old will be refused however accurate it is.
  2. 2Have the VA send it directly. A photocopy you hold may not be accepted.
  3. 3Apply to the Department of Revenue with your registration.
  4. 4If you need the disabled-parking privilege, get the physician's statement at the same time — the plates do not include it.
  5. 5If you have more than one vehicle, put the complimentary set on the one you drive most; further sets cost the standard fees.
