How to claim it

  1. 1Three routes reach the no-charge rule and they are alternatives, not conditions: needing nursing care for a VA-adjudicated service-connected disability; a singular or combined service-connected rating of 70% or more; or a total 100% rating based on individual unemployability.
  2. 2Bring the DD-214. The board asks for it, and asks that you were not discharged under dishonorable conditions.
  3. 3You should be, or have been, a resident of this state. Non-residents can be admitted where no resident is waiting for a bed — but they must have a medical need for nursing home care and must be able to pay the applicable daily charge.
  4. 4A physician’s examination within 30 days of admission is required, confirming no communicable disease, no need for hospital-level care beyond the home, and no safety risk to yourself or others.
  5. 5If you cannot meet the charge and none of the exemption routes fit, ask about assistance — the board states that indigent veterans can request help with the expense of care.

CorrectionSpouse admission here is narrower than the usual formula. The board does not admit a spouse on the veteran’s service alone: the eligibility route is being "a spouse of a veteran who is currently a resident" in one of the homes. If the veteran is not living there, the spouse has no route.
Worth knowingThe individual-unemployability route is stated explicitly, which many states leave to inference. A veteran rated total at 100% on individual unemployability reaches the exemption in terms rather than by argument.
Known gapThe guidebook, printed for 2024-2025, describes four homes at Collins, Jackson, Kosciusko and Oxford, each of 150 beds. The board’s current homes page lists five, adding Tradition at Biloxi. Both are the board’s own publications; the count on the older document is the one to treat as out of date.
