The Firearm Permit Costs Nothing at Any Disability Rating — Renewals Too

Mississippi waives the concealed-carry permit fee, and the renewal fees, for a veteran with a service-connected disability. Any rating qualifies — there is no percentage floor. The state's ordinary 12-month residency requirement can be waived if you hold a valid out-of-state permit, are active military stationed in Mississippi, or are retired law enforcement, so someone who has just moved in is not necessarily shut out for a year. Because the renewals are free as well, this is a recurring saving rather than a one-off.

What this benefit is

Mississippi waives the concealed-carry permit fee, and the renewal fees, for a veteran with a service-connected disability. Any rating qualifies — there is no percentage floor. The state's ordinary 12-month residency requirement can be waived if you hold a valid out-of-state permit, are active military stationed in Mississippi, or are retired law enforcement, so someone who has just moved in is not necessarily shut out for a year. Because the renewals are free as well, this is a recurring saving rather than a one-off.

What it's worth: Permit fee and renewal fees waived

  • ANY service-connected disability qualifies. No minimum percentage is set.
  • Both the initial permit fee and the RENEWAL fees are waived, so the saving repeats.
  • The ordinary 12-month state residency requirement applies, but is WAIVABLE if you hold a valid out-of-state permit, are active military stationed in Mississippi, or are retired law enforcement.
  • The ordinary suitability and background requirements for a permit are unaffected by the fee waiver.
  • Administered by the Department of Public Safety.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • You have a service-connected disability.
  • Mississippi issues the permit.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Download the VA Benefit Summary Letter showing service connection. The percentage does not matter.
  2. 2Apply to the Department of Public Safety and claim the disabled veteran fee waiver on the application.
  3. 3If you have moved to Mississippi recently, ask about the residency waiver rather than waiting twelve months — an existing out-of-state permit may be enough.
  4. 4Diary the renewal. It is free, but it is not automatic.
  5. 5Keep the VA letter with your renewal papers so the waiver is not queried each time.

Worth knowingThe renewal waiver is the part people lose. A permit renewed without claiming it is charged like anyone else's.
