Your Military Handgun Training Counts — Swear an Affidavit Instead of Taking the Course

Mississippi's enhanced carry endorsement ordinarily requires an instructional course and a qualification. An honorably retired or serving veteran with law-enforcement or combat handgun training can have that requirement waived BY AFFIDAVIT — a sworn statement of the training you already have, rather than sitting the course again. It saves the course fee and a day, and it recognises training the state already trusts in other contexts. What it does not waive is the permit itself or any of the suitability requirements.

How to claim it

  1. 1Ask the Department of Public Safety for the affidavit form for the training waiver.
  2. 2Be specific about the training in the affidavit — the school, the weapon and the year, not just that you served.
  3. 3Bring your DD214 and any weapons qualification records you have.
  4. 4The affidavit is sworn, so have it notarised before you go.
  5. 5Apply for the base permit in the usual way; only the course requirement is waived.
