What this benefit is

Every Minnesota professional licensing board must run a procedure to expedite your application, and to issue a temporary licence on an out-of-state one — but for a veteran the door closes two years after separation.

What it's worth: An expedited application, and a temporary licence to work while it runs

  • The value here is months of income you do not lose waiting, rather than a fee you do not pay. §197.4552 does not waive fees.
  • The temporary licence lets you practise for a length of time each board sets for itself, so ask the board what that period is before you rely on it.

Who is entitled to it

  • The statute reaches you — as an active duty member, a spouse, or a recently separated veteran.
  • You are the servicemember or veteran.
  • The discharge was honorable, or general under honorable conditions.
  • You are the spouse of an active duty servicemember.
  • Your home is in Minnesota.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: For a veteran, within two years of separation
  1. 1Say at the point of application that you are asking for expedited processing under §197.4552. Boards run their own procedure and will not apply it to an application already in the ordinary queue.
  2. 2For the temporary licence, bring evidence of a current, valid licence in another state with no disciplinary history, and expect a criminal background study.
  3. 3Mind the two-year clock if you are the veteran: the statute reaches someone who left service in the two years before the application date, with confirmation of an honorable or general discharge status.
  4. 4The statute binds each professional licensing board defined in §214.01, subdivisions 2 and 3 — so which board you deal with decides the detail, not a single statewide desk.

Worth knowingThe two-year clock is the trap. A veteran ten years out of service is not excluded from licensure — only from this expedited route. Someone leaving service now should apply while the window is open rather than after settling in.
Known gapEach board sets the length of the temporary licence for itself, and the statute sets no deadline for a board to act on an expedited application. We publish the obligation and not a timetable, because there is no statewide one to publish.

Sources

Why only one source type: The statute states the eligible groups, the two-year window and the temporary-licence conditions in terms. The boards’ own implementation pages sit behind a bot filter that turned us away, so we cite the statute alone rather than a page we could not read.
