What it's worth: Nursing care at $208.80 a day for a veteran, against $357.51 for a non-veteran — before the affordability assessment

  • Those are the published rates for 1 January to 30 September 2026. For the quarter before, 1 October to 31 December 2025, the figures were $199.06 and $347.77.
  • Domiciliary care runs at Jacobetti only, at $3,228.00 a month for the same period.
  • The published rate is a ceiling, not a bill. Michigan Veteran Homes assesses each member monthly on assets, income, marital status and dependants, and a member who cannot pay the maximum is assessed on their own circumstances. A member who can pay in full is expected to.

  • You are a veteran, or the spouse or surviving spouse of one.
  • The discharge was honorable, or general under honorable conditions.
  • Your home is in Michigan.

How to claim it

  1. 1Contact the home directly rather than a central office — each has its own admissions coordinator, and the application comes from them.
  2. 2Do not rule yourself out on residency. The homes state plainly that Michigan residency is not a requirement.
  3. 3Ask about federal VA benefits at the same time: long-term care, extended care and short-term stays can offset the assessment, and Aid and Attendance may add a daily stipend.
  4. 4If you are the dependant of an eligible veteran — spouse, former spouse, widow or widower, or a Gold Star parent — you apply in your own right.

Worth knowingThe gap between the veteran rate and the non-veteran rate is the benefit in one number: $208.80 a day against $357.51 for the same nursing care. Over a year that is a difference of more than $54,000.
CorrectionMichigan residency is not an admission requirement. That is unusual enough that a veteran who has moved away, or who is considering moving to be near family, should not assume the door has closed.
Worth knowingEligibility also runs through federal VA healthcare or financial assistance for long-term nursing care — so the federal determination is worth pursuing first, not second.
