What this benefit is
The whole bill on your homestead — and since 2025 you no longer have to reapply every year.
What it's worth: 100% of your property tax bill
- We do not hold Michigan county tax rates, so we cannot convert this into a dollar figure for your county.
Who is entitled to it
- You served in the U.S. armed forces.
- The VA has rated you 100% service-connected, permanent and total.
- You own and occupy the home as your principal residence.
- Your home is in Michigan.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

- Automatic until something changes
- Granted once and carried forward. You must report a change in ownership, occupancy or status.
Worth knowingThe annual reapplication is gone. For taxes levied on or after 1 January 2025 the exemption stays in effect without reapplying until the veteran rescinds it or the assessor denies it. Anyone who lapsed under the old yearly rule should re-file.
Worth knowingA surviving spouse keeps it while unremarried, and — unusually — carries it to a homestead acquired AFTER the veteran died. Most states tie the exemption to the house the veteran lived in.
